A lot of pros struggle with generating income in the off-season or don’t even bother trying. Fortunately for you, changes in the golf industry are changing the way you can earn income. Specifically, I am referring to the widespread use of golf launch monitor technology and simulators. Before Trackman, gathering information on launch angles, spin rates, dispersion, swing speed and carry yardage required a full indoor facility and software usually only affordable by club manufacturers and the biggest golf retail stores. Now, just about anyone who is willing to make a modest investment can learn more about their swing and improve their game.
Look at PGA touring pros, guys like Bryson Dechambeau and Cameron Champ are thinking of their golf swings in a statistical and scientific sense. Data allows you to track progress and tweak results. If it can help the best players in the world, imagine what it can do for your membership!
How can golf launch monitor technology and simulators help your membership and in the process put more money in your pocket?
For one, it can be used year around. More lessons and club fittings in the winter means more money for you and your club.
The younger, better players are starting to think of their games in terms of statistics. Be an important resource to them. Students who really value their stats, and get a thrill as they watch themselves improve, are highly likely to continue booking lessons. Keep these members engaged and excited!
The social aspect is key. Simulators promote a “man cave” type of environment where members play a round of golf, have some drinks and watch a game. Many clubs now hold golf leagues in which groups of members will compete weekly against other groups of members.
Members who want to continue working on their swings throughout the year can do so. When these players continue to improve, you will be given the credit. This will help you generate referrals and a following at your club. In turn making you more valuable to your club which hopefully means more money to you!
As you know, the one drawback to these launch monitor programs is the price tag. Many of the indoor simulators can cost upwards of $50,000, and the indoor/outdoor Trackman combo can cost around $25,000. Although prices are coming down, these set ups aren’t cheap. Work out the figures and sell it to your board. Like any good investment, the money up front will yield returns in the long term. Its clear that this technology is becoming a staple in golf teaching environments. Take advantage and don’t get left behind!
